Jucy's wins the prize!!!

After looking for good Q in Tennessee, Ohio, and Kentucky, we have a winner. Jucy's BBQ is on the way home off of 265 going around Lousville, KY. If you see the little yellow sign on the side of the road, TAKE THE EXIT. It is about 1.5 miles off the main road, but worth every foot. This is about a close to mine as you can get. Real hickory smoked ribs, real sliced brisket, and their sauce is really good. The pulled pork is wonderful. The beans are more of a western style ranch beans...not my favorite...but at Jucy's it is about the meat.

Jungle Jim's is a Unique Experience

If you come to Cincy, you need to go see Jungle Jim's just once. It s locatd north of town in Fairfield, and definitely worth the trip. I would have taken some pics, but they do not allow it. They have pretty much one of everthing you can imagine from pretty much every country. They have every boar's head meat and cheese, thousands of cheese brands, every kind of beverage, cracker, cookie, sweet, etc. Large produce selection, 6000 hot sauces, 40 year old balsamic vinegar for $300 a bottle, live fish wells full of trout, talipia and other fish. You name it, they have it.

They also have a cooking school and some other stuff I can't even think of right now. Interesting bathrooms. You just have to see it. Oh yeah, their coffee selection is very cool too. Try the Highlander Grog for something unique.

Back to BBQ in Cincy

We have found that Burbanks has the best BBQ in Cincinnati, although I think they could improve by cooking their ribs a little longer and a little slower under a lower temperature. Their sauces aren't bad. The real star of the menu is their side items. The slaw is good, the sweet potatoe caserole rocks, and they have authentic collard greens all the time, and they are alomst like my grandma used to make. The greens are so awesome, I have bought pints of them and taken them home. I can eat a pint in about 5 minutes flat. A little hot vinegar, and cornbread, and a couple of the fried catfish fillets and I am in heaven. We cook our own cheese grits. It's the best thing in town. The only ding I could give them is their beans. Nothing to brag about. If you know about Earl Pitts, then you know that radio character is none other than Gary Burbank, a Cincy radio personality on a local AM station. This is his resturaunt. The menu has some of the Earl Pitts stories on them. Its the closest thing to a non-yankee place you will get up here.

When we ate at Burbanks, one of the waiters told us to try this place about 15 minutes away called "Big Art's". He said if we really liked ribs, we needed to try that place. So we did. We drove over there a few days later and it was more like, "Big Disappointment". They boiled the ribs (heresy), and they covered the ribs with so much sauce, it was like they were hiding something. And they were! They had MSG injected into just about everything. Cynthia ordered her ribs dry because of the MSG and they were boiled off the bone and had NO FLAVOR whatsoever. Their beans were way too sweet, and their slaw was gushing with mayonnaise....ughhh. It is a little hole in the wall that shares a parking lot with a gas station. I am not so concerned about the decor or the class of place it was. As any good BBQ seeker knows, the closer the building is to being condemned, the better the Q is. Except in this case. So for now, Burbanks is the place to be.

In search of the ultimate BBQ

We have been to several places since we have been in Cincinnati looking for anything that might have looked like real BBQ. Unfortunately, pickings are pretty slim. However, we found a couple of gems, and will advise you where to stay away from in the vicinity. The next few posts will deal with that.

We had heard about the Montgomery Inn. I was taken there by some software reps last year. It sucks. Don't even bother. The ribs are boiled. Everything is covered in sweet sauce, so much so, that it hides the flavor of the meat. This is what these Yankees up here are used to. Supposedly this famous place is where Bob Hope had ribs flown in for his golf tournament every year. I have lots 2 points of respect for Mr. Hope because of this.

We had heard about this place in Lexington, KY called Billy's BBQ. It was labeled, "The Best BBQ in Lexington". So we drove from Cincinnati to Lexington JUST TO EAT BBQ. Does this tell you I am serious? Here is a picture of Cynthia outside the place to prove we were there. They did not have any "sampler" platters so we had to buy a little bit of everything, which meant we had way to much leftover. We politely asked for a take home plate. We dumped in in the trash can at a near by mall. I am convinced now that people in Lexington have little to no taste buds as this was possibly the worst I have had in a long time. The sauces sucked and the meat had no flavor. Everything was extremely greasy. The employees had no passion for the food they were serving, and no pride in serving it. Oh yeah, their idea of cheese grits is to throw a pound of garlic and a bunch of cheese in some grits and bake it like a muffin. This was like eating a cure for vampires. It was downright gross, but the smell and consistency would have made for good catfish bait.




In my next post, we'll review some more places - believe it or not there area couple of good places, and one GREAT place. More about that later....
